Policy Statement on Anti-Harassment
In all its activities, the Brazilian Logic Society SBL (for Sociedade Brasileira de Lógica) seeks to promote a welcoming environment that encourages the free expression and exchange of ideas. The SBL supports equal opportunities and treatment for all participants of its events, regardless of gender, gender identity or expression, race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion or religious belief, age, marital status, sexual orientation, disability or immigration status.
Harassment, sexual or otherwise, is a form of misconduct that undermines the integrity of SBL's activities and mission. SBL strives to maintain an environment free of harassment. Any person aware of improper conduct can file a complaint confidentially and anonymously by writing to the email address contato-etica@sbl.org.br. The reporting mechanism ensures that privacy is respected while alerting SBL to the situation.
Understanding Harassment
Harassment is derogatory or threatening behavior directed at an individual or a group of people. This conduct may include, but is not limited to: epithets, slurs or negative stereotypes; threatening, intimidating or hostile acts; derogatory jokes and the display or circulation of written or graphic material that belittles or shows hostility or dislike towards an individual or group.
Harassment also refers to intimidation or coercion of a sexual nature. Sexual harassment can include offensive comments about a person's gender, gender identity or sexual preference. Harassment can include unwanted or inappropriate promises of rewards in exchange for sexual favors.
It is important to be aware of the discomfort or offense that words or actions may cause. A provocative comment or off-the-cuff remark that may be harmless to some may be perceived as harassment by others. Consequently, individuals must act to ensure that their words and actions communicate respect for others, in light of the international and multicultural nature of the logical community. Those in positions of authority should be especially aware of this policy, as individuals in subordinate positions may be reluctant to voice their objections or discomfort with unwanted behavior.
Applicability to the Profession
SBL believes that harassment has no place in Logic, whatever the context. Members of the profession must refrain from such behavior, as well as work to prevent it.
